Mouthguards

If your child is a budding athlete, you probably want to encourage their love of sports as it’s a healthy way to stay fit and socialise with peers.

However, many popular sports carry the risk of a dental injury that can chip or crack a tooth or even knock it out completely. Any form of dental injury is always distressing and can result in lengthy dental appointments to correct it and require restorative dentistry for life.

Wearing a sports mouthguard can help to reduce the risk or severity of a dental injury. Jetty Road Dental Clinic can provide well-fitting custom-made mouthguards.

Why Choose a Custom-Made Mouthguard?

While it is possible to buy over-the-counter mouthguards cheaply, these are ill-fitting and only offer minimal protection at best. They can fall out easily or obstruct breathing and are frequently uncomfortable to wear. Consequently, they may well remain unworn in your child’s sports bag. Contrast this with our custom-fitted mouthguards that are designed to fit precisely over your child’s teeth and gums, giving the maximum amount of protection. In addition, they can be thickened in critical areas for increased cushioning. Most importantly, our mouthguards are comfortable to wear so your child can breathe freely, and they will remain securely in place.

What Is the Procedure for Having a Custom Fitted Mouthguard?

The process for having a custom-fitted mouthguard is very straightforward. Our dentist will simply take an impression of your child’s teeth, and we use this to create their mouthguard. Once the mouthguard is ready, we can try it in their mouth to make sure it fits exactly and is ready to use.

Our mouthguards are made from a tough, durable material that will not tear or rip easily. They have a neutral taste and are odour free.

Looking after a Mouthguard

Your child’s mouthguard is easy to care for, but it is important to clean it thoroughly after each use. It should be stored in the container provided and kept away from direct heat as this could distort it. Make sure your child brings their mouthguard with them to regular dental checkups so we can make sure it still fits properly and provides good protection. As your child’s teeth and jaws develop, we will need to replace the mouthguard more frequently than an adult mouthguard.

A custom-made mouthguard is affordable and is a very effective way to help protect your child’s smile.
